Raising Arms

As we age, one movement that is almost always subject to loss or restriction is the raising of our arms above our head. Even if it isn’t persistent, people are familiar with pain that can accompany raising your arms. We have all felt the stinging sensation that shoots through our shoulder, neck or back when we lift our arm beyond what we should.

Difficulty Reaching Above You - Wise Move

Like standing up, it is a movement that must defy gravity, but raising our arms isn’t solely dependant on arm strength. If your shoulder or neck is not functioning smoothly, then raising your arm can be extremely difficult and even painful.  What about your rib cage! Does it move as one unit when you raise your arm, or do you the ribs fan and compress where needed?  These are a few relationships we explore using the Feldenkrais Method,® Being aware of these relationships is what permits unhindered and efficient movement.

Nothing is permanent about our behavior patterns except our belief that they are so...
